For years, Lazaro worked tirelessly under the California sun—harvesting grapes and supporting his family through seasonal farm labor. Born and raised in Ciudad Guzmán, Mexico, Lazaro came to the United States at just 22 years old in search of the American Dream. He found steady work in Galt, California, eventually becoming a full-time employee at Jim Welch Hay Services, a company rooted in agricultural labor. But like many seasonal workers, Lazaro faced an uncertain future every fall when the grape harvest came to a close.
That’s when he decided it was time for a change.
A New Opportunity—and a New Direction
Recognizing Lazaro’s dedication and strong work ethic, his employer presented him with a life-changing opportunity: if he could earn his Class A Commercial Driver’s License, he could return to the company as a truck driver, hauling hay and earning a stable, year-round income.
Determined to make the most of this chance, Lazaro visited the Galt AJCC, where he connected with a case manager who introduced him to several workforce support programs—including DW-AG, WIOA-167, and Temporary Housing Assistance. With guidance through the application process, Lazaro enrolled in the 160 Driving Academy, where he began his journey toward a professional trucking career.
Full Support, Full Commitment
At 160 Driving Academy, Lazaro’s training was fully funded through the DW-AG Program, and he received additional support to ease the financial burden of the transition:
- Gas assistance through WIOA-167
- $650 rental support through the Temporary Housing Program
He dedicated himself to the program, gaining confidence behind the wheel and mastering the knowledge and skills needed to pass the CDL exam.
Graduation—and a New Career Begins
On April 8, 2025, Lazaro proudly graduated from 160 Driving Academy. Just six days later, on April 14, he started his new role as a truck driver with Jim Welch Hay Services—the very company that first believed in his potential.
He now earns $22/hour, with a wage increase to $29/hour after his probationary period—a significant step up from his previous seasonal work.
A Story Worth Sharing
Lazaro doesn’t just see this as a personal victory—he sees it as proof that hard work, paired with the right support system, can truly change your life. He proudly shares his story with friends and coworkers, encouraging others to take that first step just like he did.
